What's actually clogging drains in the homes we visit
Most of the drains we cleared this fall came down to a handful of causes, and the right fix depends on which one it is.
- Tubs and showers: almost always hair. On a recent Medina call we cabled three tub drains, and two of them were packed with hair. We cable the line, pull the hair back, then run the cable a second time before we test. In older buildings we've found newer plastic tub drains tied into original 2-inch cast iron that is scaled up inside and keeps catching debris. If that keeps happening, the long-term fix is descaling the line, not another snake.
- Bathroom sinks: often the pop-up stopper itself, packed with hair, or the arm that lifts it has come loose. Sometimes that's a five-minute fix, and we'll tell you so.
- Kitchen sinks: grease and food scraps in the branch line between the sink and the main stack, usually 15 to 40 feet of pipe. We auger it out and flush it with hot water. In one home the washing machine drained into the same branch, so every load of laundry backed up the kitchen sink.
- Toilets: a closet auger clears most clogs. When it can't, the blockage is past the toilet's trap and the toilet has to come off. "Flushable" wipes and paper towels are the repeat offenders.
- Dishwasher not draining: on one call, a spoon was lodged in the garbage disposal.
Not every backup is a clog. A kitchen sink that only backed up when upstairs fixtures drained turned out to be a venting and piping problem, so that's what we told the owner instead of selling a drain cleaning. And when a floor drain starts gurgling right after a sink is cleared, we check the main line: on one of those calls the camera found a large offset with roots that was the real problem.
