When more than one drain backs up at once, the problem is your main sewer line. We clear it for a flat price and put a camera down the line so you can see exactly what caused it.
Your main line is the pipe every fixture in the house empties into on its way to the city sewer. When it blocks, water surfaces at the lowest opening it can find, usually a basement floor drain or a basement toilet. We clear the blockage at the source using a cable machine or hydro-jetting, whichever your line actually needs, then confirm the line is flowing.
Every main line cleaning includes a complimentary camera inspection and written report. You watch the footage with us, so you find out whether this was a one-time soft blockage or a recurring root or structural issue you will want to plan around. No guessing, and no upsell pressure.
What we're finding when main lines back up
The first sign is almost always the basement floor drain. We confirm it's the main line by running fixtures upstairs and checking the cleanout, then put a camera in when we can, to find the blockage and make sure the pipe is safe to cable.
What recent main line calls turned up:
- Roots where the house's cast iron meets the old clay tile, often right where a 4-inch pipe steps up to 6-inch. On an Edina line near Grandview, that's exactly where the roots were, so we cabled the full line twice.
- Toilet paper wedged at a turn about 30 feet out, with no roots at all. Not every backup means bad pipe.
- "Flushable" wipes balled up with roots. They don't break down the way toilet paper does.
- Long, mixed lines. Some run 140 feet or more to the city and change from cast iron to clay to PVC along the way. One line had a stretch of Transite, a cement pipe used in some mid-century homes, between the cast iron and the clay.
Access matters too. Brass cleanout caps that have seized for decades get cut out and replaced with a new adjustable cap, so the next cleaning is easier. With no usable cleanout, we go through a pulled toilet. And when the cleanout is 3 inches on a 4-inch line, the largest blade that fits can't reach roots hanging from the top of the pipe; that's when we recommend hydro jetting as a follow-up and show you why on the footage.
Every main line cleaning ends with a camera pass so you see the result. Flat rate: $429 through a standard cleanout, or $599 through a pulled toilet or roof vent, camera included.
