In older west-metro homes, tree roots are the most common reason a main line backs up. We cut them back to the pipe wall and clear the line, then put a camera down so you can see exactly what we found.
Roots work into the small gaps in aging clay-tile and cast-iron lines and grow until they catch debris and block flow. We remove the intrusion, restore the line, and show you what we found on camera. If the pipe needs more than a cleaning, we tell you plainly and let you decide on your own timeline.
Where roots get into West Metro sewer lines
Roots find the joints. Clay tile comes in 2-foot sections, so an old clay line has a joint every 2 feet for roots to work into. The other hot spots are where the house's cast iron meets the clay and where your line connects to the city main.
What recent root jobs looked like:
- A St. Louis Park line with roots at eight joints in its first 58 feet, plus a sag that holds water and some early offsets.
- An Edina line in White Oaks with roots coming through four joints and a mass at 95 feet thick enough to stop the camera.
- An Edina line near Grandview with roots growing in right where the 4-inch cast iron meets 6-inch clay.
A cable cuts through the roots and gets you flowing again. When the cleanout is smaller than the pipe, roots hanging from the top of the line can be left behind, so we camera afterward and recommend hydro jetting when it's needed. Neither one removes the roots wrapped around the outside of the pipe, so a line with heavy roots needs a regular cleaning schedule until it's lined or replaced.
